This delicious healthy coleslaw pairs with juicy Air Fryer Burgers, Dutch Oven BBQ Pulled Pork, or tender Steak or Chicken!

There are two teams when it comes to coleslaw, vinegar based coleslaw and mayo based coleslaw. Although I find myself somewhere in the middle of these too, mayo based coleslaw always wins for me.

This recipe is Whole30 compliant and contains no sugar or sweetener making it a great side dish and low carb option for whatever way you like to eat.

🥗Is Coleslaw Whole30?

Not only is Coleslaw Whole30 compliant, in many ways, it’s also the best the Whole30 side dish. Packed full of high fiber, nutrient-dense, vegetables with a healthy amount of platted fat, all that needs to be added is a delicious protein and dinner is ready.

Coleslaw is also classic comfort food that people love, Whole30 or not, so families and guests will keep coming back for more. You can serve it at a summer BBQ or as a side dish for any meal!

🌿Simple Coleslaw Dressing

  • Coleslaw Mix: Taking a little help from the grocery store, a bag of Coleslaw Mix with cabbage and carrots is the base. You can make your own at home too by shredding your own carrots.
  • Mayonnaise: Store-bought compliant mayonnaise like Primal Kitchen, Sir Kensington’s or Tessemae’s can be used. You can use vegan mayonnaise, or you can make your own Whole30 mayonnaise.
  • Apple Cider Vinegar: The acid from the apple cider vinegar balances out the mayo and adds a delicious tang with the slightest hint of sweetness.
  • Spices: Ground mustard and celery seed add flavor. Salt and pepper enhance all the flavor of the vegetables.
  • Green Onion: Chopped green onion adds color and freshness for a mild onion flavor. You could also use shallots or thinly sliced red onion.

📖How to make Whole30 Coleslaw

1️⃣ In a large bowl, whisk together mayonnaise, apple cider vinegar, ground mustard, celery seed, salt, and pepper until all ingredients are fully combined,

2️⃣ Add in coleslaw mix (or homemade blend if you like to shred cabbage) along with green onion and toss everything together until evenly coated. Let it sit and marinate in the fridge for 30 minutes and serve cold.

🚫With No Mayo

Whole30 coleslaw can be made without mayo and tastes just as delicious! Use a dressing of olive or avocado oil mixed with lemon or lime juice. Apple cider vinegar can also be added for a little sweetness and to help with digestion. Fresh herbs like cilantro or parsley and spices like garlic powder, mustard, and black pepper can be included for extra flavor.

🔁Add Ins For Coleslaw

  • Almonds
  • Cashews
  • Pumpkin Seeds
  • Diced Jalapeno
  • Sunflower Seeds
  • Bacon
  • Broccoli
  • Dried Cranberries

Can I use white vinegar instead of apple cider vinegar?

Yes, white vinegar can be used. The flavor will only change slightly.

A good substitute for vinegar in coleslaw is some lemon juice as it adds a balance of acidity to the dish. However, use to taste as it will taste a bit different.

Notes

How long does Coleslaw last in the fridge?

Coleslaw is best served right away as the vegetables will start to break down and become soft after they are mixed with the dressing. However, coleslaw will last for 3 to 5 days in the refrigerator if properly stored in an airtight container though the texture will get a bit softer each day.
